Outline for Culminating Project Proposal For the Engineering Management Program St. Cloud State University Your culminating project proposal should include the following headings and should be in double line spacing. You can use 8 – 10 pages or so to describe your project proposal. Cover Page See format for cover page on the next page. 1. Introduction Provide a brief description of the project and any other background information that is relevant. The introduction should lead the reader to the problem of the project and include the goal of the proposal. Ideally, it should not exceed 2 pages. 2. Problem Statement A problem statement describes what’s wrong in the area/case that you are addressing. It should be described briefly, may be in a sentence or two. In other words, a problem statement describes the pain of the project. For example, when you visit a doctor, you describe the problem: The patient has a pain in the lower back. The pain is at the peak after the patient gets up from the bed. 3. Nature and Significance of the Problem Explain the rationale behind choosing this specific problem. There are millions of problems in a company. But only problems that significantly impact the company will be picked up for solving. Going back to the pain problem, significance will put emphasis on the impact of the problem. The patient’s pain is so bad that the patient is unable to work 2 days a week. This causes a significant loss of income and has put the whole family at risk. 4. Objective of the Project List specific objective(s)/goal(s) of your project. The objective of the project can be described in a sentence or two. The objectives describe the intent of the project proposal. Going back to the pain example some of the objectives of the project are: Map the exact location of the pain. Quantify the pain on a standard pain threshold scale. Investigate the root cause of the pain. Propose a new method of sleeping to avoid this problem. Implement the new method of sleeping on the bed. 5. Project Questions State at least 4-5 questions based on the problem and linked to the objective of your study that you will answer when you execute the project. 2-3 of these questions should seek to return a quantitative answer. Avoid writing yes/no type of questions. These questions can be answered after you execute the project and should be measurable in some way. Stating your questions starting with “what” is a good example. This is a STEM degree and so the project should provide answers to quantitative questions. Further it is important to note, this is NOT a STUDY! This is NOT a paper. It is a PROJECT. Which means students must DO something. The answers to questions can only be answered after the project is done. So, the intent is not to read a few papers and write the answers, but to do the project and then answer the project questions. Some examples of project questions are: What is the percentage saving in labor cost after implementing the new system. What is the reduction in error after implementing an automated data entry system? What is the current rejection rate? What is the reduction in rework after implementing the new system? Hypotheses are essential when working on experimental type of project, whereas research questions provide guidance for the kinds of data the researcher should collect, analyze, and interpret. 6. Literature Review At this preliminary stage find at least 5-8 articles or published literature on the topic that you are looking into. The literature may be related to the problem and/or the methodology that you intend to use to solve the problem. Students should avoid having all references from the web. Students need to use the online journals and publications in the SCSU library for background study and use such references from books and journals. The literature review should be written in a paragraph format and include in-text citation of sources in APA format. The sources cited in-text in this section should be listed in your references section in APA format. 7. Methodology Describe how you will conduct the project. Be as specific and detailed as possible. A brief review of literature related to your topic can be cited to support your rationale for choosing a particular methodology. Methodology can be compared with breadcrumbs you expect to follow the path to your solution. It may change or can be modified but you still need to know what you will do to solve the problem of the project. Going back to the back pain example: Have the patient to undergo an X-ray and MRI to determine if there are any structural or tissue changes that are causing the back pain. Investigate the bed and mattress to investigate the back support. Check Calcium level and bone density. Depending on the root cause develop a treatment plan. Start treatment and after 3 months check the patient again to confirm if this approach was successful and report the results of the project. 8. Timeline Include a timeline that you anticipate completing your project. You may use the project management Gantt chart format or list your activities with expected completion dates in a tabular format. 9. References List any references that you have cited in your proposal in APA format. Only the sources that are cited in the proposal should be listed as references in this section and vice a versa. Do NOT list any articles that you just came across or read. Remember to include references other than web links.
