Limit discussion to 10-15 minutes and then move on to Part II. As you watch these clips from the Grape video, think about child abuse. Do you see any abuse? 2. If YES: Who is being abused? What kind of abuse do you suspect? Which family members are at the highest risk of abusing Arnie? Why are they more vulnerable? Do you think that it needs to be reported? Why or why not? What are the ethical and legal issues involved? Consider the concept of family preservation. What is family preservation? Can this family be preserved? If NO: How would you proceed with this family? Part II: Intervention Role-play Choose a person to be the social worker who has not played this role previously. If you have an extra person in your group, she/he will help the group process the role-play AND can step in to assist the social worker if the social worker asks for help. Limit your role-play to about 15 minutes and then move to Part III. This family is in crisis as the situation with Arnie is escalating. Family members are getting increasingly frustrated with him. The focus on today’s family meeting with the social worker is to develop a plan and intervention so that Arnie is safe. The social worker will explore with the family ways to keep Arnie safe. Perhaps this was one of the goals and objectives that you developed last week in the planning. If so, you can work on discussing and implementing that plan. You may also explore additional plans (interventions) to keep Arnie safe. Identify at least 3 interventions to keep Arnie safe. Consider possible micro, mezzo and macro levels.
