Unit A/615/2713 Personal Leadership and Management Development Level 6 15 Credits Related Qualifications ATHE Level 6 Diploma in Management 603/0627/0ATHE Level 6 Extended Diploma in Management 603/0628/2 Sample Assignment Task 1 You are to prepare a discussion paper aimed at the group of ‘middle’ managers in your organisation which evaluates the: terms leadership and management and their application in organisations personal leadership and management skills required to support achievement of organisational goals The discussion paper should include exploration of relevant theories and practice and clearly demonstrate, with examples your understanding of how personal leadership and management skills help to ensure achievement of organisational objectives Extension activities: To gain a merit grade, the paper should include an analysis of the impact of organisational objectives, values and cultures on the leadership and management role To gain a distinction grade you must add a section to the paper in which you analyse the leadership and management skills of a leader in a named organisation. The leader does not have to be from an organisation you know well personally, but the analysis must be based on documented evidence. LO1 AC 1.1, 1.2, M1 D1 Task 2 This task is designed to enable you to manage the development of your own personal and management skills to support achievement of organisational objectives. It falls into several parts which will need to be completed over a period of time: Carry out an audit of own personal leadership and management skills, presenting it in a clear format showing strengths and development points. The skills audit must relate to a particular role which is undertaken in the organisation and be completed with reference to the needs of the organisation and its stated objectives. This may be an organisation where you are employed or where you work in a voluntary capacity. You could also use as an example for the purposes of this assignment, an organisation you know well or where you study. Set objectives to meet personal development needs identified in your audit to support achievement of organisational objectives Identify and explain the opportunities you will utilise to meet the objectives set Prepare a personal development plan to develop own leadership and management skills to support organisational objectives Carry out and record appropriate personal development activities you have undertaken in accordance with the plan to develop skills identified in the audit. You must include evidence to support the record produced When you have completed the activities in the plan, review progress and outcomes of the personal development against the objectives set Extension activities: To gain a merit grade; Justify how opportunities selected for the personal development plan support achievement of organisational objectives Compare current personal leadership and management skills with the outcome of the original audit identifying clearly what has been achieved and what has not. To gain a distinction grade; Analyse areas for further development and provide a new plan clearly showing the amendments you have made LO2 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5 LO3 3.1 2M1 3M1 3D1 Guidelines for assessors The assignments submitted by learners must achieve the learning outcomes and meet the standards specified by the assessment criteria for the unit. To achieve a merit or distinction grade, the learners must demonstrate that they have achieved all the criteria set for these grades. Where work for the pass standard is marginal, assessors can take account of any extension work completed by the learners. The suggested evidence listed below is how learners can demonstrate that they have met the required standards. LO1: AC 1.1, 1.2, M1 D1 The learner must produce a clear evaluation of the terms leadership and management identifying the differences and similarities and the interface between them. The learner should provide examples to show their application in organisations. The learner must also provide an evaluation of the personal leadership and management skills needed to support achievement of organisational objectives. The evaluation must be balanced, directly related to the organisation’s objectives and lead to considered judgements. The learner must show clear recognition that the style and approach to leadership and management roles must be influenced by the needs of the organisation at different periods in time. The analysis should consider the points made in detail and refer to the impact of organisational objectives, values and culture. This should be a comprehensive piece pf work. The analysis must be based on a named leader and present documented evidence to justify comments made such a proof of increased/decreased profit, better/ worse customer service etc. and their link to the leadership and management skills displayed. The learner may consider aspects of weaker leadership and management skills, as well as those which are strong. 2. LO2: AC 2.1, 2.2 2M1 3M1 3D1 The audit should be informed, detailed, objective and presented in a clear format. It should relate to the learner’s own personal leadership and management skills, in the context of a stated role in a named organisation. The audit should be based on more than personal reflection. The objectives set should be SMART and directly linked to the outcomes of the audit. The opportunities to meet the plan must be realistic and directly related to the audit. The personal development plan must relate to own objectives and those of the identified organisation. The tutor may need to guide the learner on the choice of organisation used for this assignment. The plan must be detailed with specific tasks, timescales, resource needs and success criteria. There must be evidence of the activities which have been carried out, their relevance to the plan and the outcomes. This should be logged in full. As stated in the assessment guidance for this unit, the learner will need time to undertake the activities stated in the plan The review of progress must be detailed and related to the stated objectives. The learner will need to make judgements on the progress which has been made and where there are shortfalls. The objectives should be justified in the context of achievement of organisational objectives as well as those of the individual. The comparison between current leadership and management skills and the outcome of the original audit should be specific, accurate and linked to the personal development plan. The comparison must be based on evidence and this must be more than personal reflection. It is possible that not all the objectives in the plan have been met but the learner must recognise this. The analysis of the areas for further development must be based on the review and development points arising out of it.
