Bevan and Sole (2014) contend that most academic
research has found few differences in how men and women communicate.
Extending the argument, Cameron (2007) argues that our ideas about
gender are often based on myths, not facts. In this discussion, you
will take the sex-role inventory test and then think through the
relationship between your gender orientation and how you communicate.

Prepare: As you prepare to write this discussion post, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Review Bevan and Sole (2014) on gender and gender orientation (focus on Section 2.2) and read the article by Cameron
  • Take the sex-role inventory test – http://personality-testing.info/tests/OSRI/.
  • Provide an example of a “masculine” or “feminine” trait you use in communication.
  • Identify the benefits of having an “androgynous” style
  • Review the grading rubric and remember that
25% of your grade is based on your application of course material
(Content/Subject Knowledge) and 25% is based on your ability to
demonstrate you are thinking critically and presenting original ideas.

Reflect: Take time to analyze, and reflect on, the role of gender in communication. Consider the concept of gender orientation
as an alternative explanation of how we approach and understand
communication. After taking the sex-role inventory test, reflect on
your sex-role inventory score and think about your own style and the
potential value of an androgynous style.

Write: Based on what you have learned this week from our text and the article, answer the following questions:

  • What is gender orientation?
  • What is your sex-role inventory score? Do
you feel it is accurate? Referencing Bevan and Sole (2014), what is a
specific verbal or nonverbal feminine or masculine trait you use in
    communication?
  • What are the benefits of having an androgynous communication style?

Please spend at least one paragraph on each of the questions.

Paraphrase the course readings at least once for
each question to help you make your points. Consider copying and
pasting these questions into a word file and addressing each of them
separately. Your answers should highlight the importance of thinking
about gender in relation to communication. You should then describe the
concept of gender orientation, examine your sex-role inventory score
with personal reflection, and explain the value of an androgynous
communication style.

Your initial response should be 200 to 300 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3.
